Hey everyone, MidBid.com (our auction site) is getting a face lift... It is being built from the ground up, and the new site will be up soon...

It will look much better, and operate very smoothly, so when it is up, come register and use the alternate internet auction site... It is free to use!

Harvey,

The pot would work, but it does have residue lead in it, and what about the bottom spout, can you keep it from leaking?

I always found it quite useful to use a small iron skillet, like about 6 inches.

Once the lead is burned away from the melting pot you have, it would nbe safe to be around, but you would have to make sure the spout does not leak out the amalgamite, as you are working with molten metal...

The pot will get hot enough, but you will need to pull out the stopper 2 screw bolts, and plug the spout... That should be able to be done with a welder, with just a spot weld...

The only reason you will need to pull out the stopper, is I don't think you will have enough room to work... You can try first however...

Hey again,

I have a few more issues.

I ran propane in the UFO with 20 grams of 14K solid gold clippings and 25 grams of amalgamite. I get the cupel hot before adding the gold then right after I add the amalgamite on top.
It creates a nice silver mirror blob in the cupel. I've run it for 40, 50 minutes and even over an hour but I can never get a perfect gold bead. I get a hard greyish chunk but if I sand it a little it looks golden.
The chunks are always glued to the cupel. I have to smash it with a hammer to get it out. I can see in the fragments that the cupel is absorbing the other metals and contaminates but it never completes.
I have run it 3 times and get the same result. I've tried it with smaller amounts with the same result.
Should I use a secondary flux like borax? Do you sell larger cupels?
Thanks in advance for any help. I am trying to make good quality videos showing the process for jewelry scrap and computer scrap.

Keith,

The problem is silver...You have some unusualy good scrap there... Must be old stuff.. They used to cut gold karat with silver... Your test asid should remove that coating.

I have, or can get bigger cupels, but they don't ship well, and that is why I quit selling them... They break up in shipping.

Grab the beat with a pair of pliers and twist... It will come out without the mess.

May I ask what the video's are for?

Thanks a million,
Bill

Thanks again,

The acid is removing some of the coating. The gold I have comes from some old jewelry. Early 1900's.

I was going to make the video to send to you. Maybe we could work out a trade for some more cupels or whatever. Even if not you can still have them if you want for help with people on the message boards.

Keith,

Thanks a million, and yes, I don't see why we could not do some trading... Will this be on DVD? If so, I can include it (if it works out right) in the UFO kits, and amalgamite, when I get an order...

Great Idea!

We might even put it up on YouTube (on this end), and give you credits for it...

Hey Bill,

I will be working on the videos for the next week or so to make them proper quality. I can place then in whatever format you want DVD, CD, MPEG, AVI (computer geek here). I can send you two separate sets. With voice over or without. You are much more of an expert than I so you providing the voice over might be better. I will be finishing the initial scrap electronics portion this week and move into gold jewelry scrap and black sand concentrate in the coming weeks.

P.S I just signed up to MiBid. I need some more melting dishes and magnesium cupels next week. However, I find that the melting dishes and a good torch works quicker then the bone ash cupels. The refined gold doesn't stick as much either but I will give the magnesium a try. I have some very beautiful nuggets using amalgamite your torch and just the melting dishes. Fell free to contact me anytime.

God bless and talk to you soon,

Keith

Hey thanks Keith, and yep, DVD would be best I think, and yes, would be nice to have voice over and no sound... We can then chose what to do.

Be sure to help spread the word about midbid, as I need that thing to grow, to make it worth my while.

I take it that you like the site. It is so much easier to navigate then ebay, and it's a whole lot cheaper...lol

The cupels always hold the bead tight, and if you are talking big buttons, they can really hold on... They do that with the bone ash too.

I am glad to see you making nuggets.. And thanks for the good word in the blog here.

May one day need your geekness to do some changing here and there on the site, but for now, I am satisfied. Boy I mean to tell you, midbid cost me a small fortune to get it built and up...

Oh,

Bye the way. I was reading a site on home build furnaces for smelting metals. I was going to do a large scale aluminum/copper smelter (pound ingots). I believe a 3rd piece top to the UFO with a smaller hole would retain much more heat. Maybe half the size. So you could take the cap on or off depending on what you wanted to achieve.

I actually used the melting dish as a lid a few time to test it out but didn't get enough air flow. I think my only mistake with the initial cupels is that I was using too much metal in the load (20 grams gold mix / 30 grams amalgamite. Lol.

Keith,

Great thinking, but we beat you to it... It is not part of the kit as of yet, because it is still in testing, but we have built a piece we call the after burner, tah keeps the flames from escaping, and it has four half holes cut along the rim, and sits flat on the top of the ufo lid... The half holes lets in the air, and out design seems to be perfect or nearly so, but thanks for your thoughts, and info... shows you are on the same page as we, here at goldco.
