Maireener or Baby Trochus-painted :(

I can't tell. Can you? These look like Maireener shells that were painted BUT They kinda look like the Baby Trochus Shells. These have been painted. THe insides don't have paint in them and most of it has flaked off. I tried a spot with non acetone fingernail polish remover and the paint came off. They are strung just like a Maireener shell necklace I had and feel just like it too. They also have a beautiful glow. Can you tell what kind they are? Here are the ones in question: These are maireener shells These are dyed and pearly baby trochus shells. Can not find a super detailed photo of them online. Thank yo sooo much!!

Probably even more difficult to differentiate once the outer layer of shell is removed. These links have larger Trochus pics... http://www.cst.cmich.edu/users/dietr1rv/zoogems/mother.html http://www.carnegiemnh.org/mollusks/classes/buttons.htm And what are these: 260243428761 ??? Maireener is Phasianotrochus irisodontes, right? That is a member of the large Trochidae (Trochus) family. Some unpeeled Maireeners here: http://tinyurl.com/5z9tpe (for reference only - you can compare with many other Trochus types). -- click for Guides

I can't tell on the item # (green shells). It states they have that irridiscent glow but I don't see it in the photo. Sooooo, technically, they are all Maireener shells if I understand correctly. Maybe it's the ones that glow brightly that peeps want. I do know that people believe in the positive energy they give off. At least my last buyer did. Maybe I'll just list these as glowing shells necklace and see what happens. at least I have 2 of them so I can see what happens with the first one. Send it out as the experiment to see what to do with the other one , lol.

I think the amount of iridescence/pearlescence clinches it, once they are peeled. Also the style of stringing. I have a difficult enough time telling one species from another. And when you take out the animal, then strip the shell, that's a tall order. I'm wondering if asking a mollusk expert at a local university's marine biology dept. to explain how to tell the difference would yield a good explanation? You could try seeing if email addresses for the professors are listed on the department's website (some do list, others don't). -- click for Guides

Thank you Astynax. That's a great idea. I'll look some up tomorrow. I am also tempted to ask a person who has purchased from me before who buys lots of Maireener and other shells if they know. I did look up some shimmery and iridescent shell necklace lisintgs and those who know, bid often and high. So if my question is not answered, at least the bidders will answer it for me, lol.
