I think you were the one that mentioned using it for sterling so I bought some. I love how easy it is to tell if it is silver or not but I'm not sure how to tell what percentage it is with it. It seems that lesser grade doesn't "appear" as quick as sterling but that's all I've been able to tell so far. Any hints? --

I haven't figured out any way to quantitate it - but you are quite right, grade doesn't appear as quickly and doesn't seem to form as much solid.

I guess one could try the test on some known silver pieces (800, 850, 900,925) to see if there's a detectable difference.

I bought some new test solutions recently, and haven't even tried the silver yet. The last new silver test solution I bought didn't work. And I never felt really sure about that test with anything less than 925 anyway.

I've never been able to even quantitate silver content with even the silver testing acid. I love the 18k method because it is so quick and so sure for sterling/925. I, too, have found that if it's less than sterling, the white doesn't appear as quickly and there isn't as much of it.

Hi everyone,

You've peaked my curiosity! Can you please tell me more about the 18K acid test & where to purchase 18K acid?

I bought mine here on Ebay. You have to have the stone to use it, not even sure what it's made of. You rub the piece against the stone to leave some silver on it and put a drop of acid on it. Sterling will quickly turn to little white flecks in the acid. --

I use the black stone when testing with the gold acid and I use a porcelain unglazed tile to test with the silver acid.
I was watching some guys buying gold at a swap meet and I asked them what they were using...a slab of cut obsidian. it has just a slight roughness that was just enough to rub the gold on.

By the 18k acid, we mean the acid used for testing for 18k gold. It dissolves silver completely, and then a white solid forms that is very easy to see. I make a streak with the silver on the black test stone.
